Supervised visitation across Madison County

Madison County is the heart of Alabama's fastest-growing metro. Nearly 400,000 people live here, anchored by Huntsville — now the state's largest city — and the City of Madison next door. The county runs from the Tennessee state line at Hazel Green and Meridianville down through Huntsville to the river communities, and east through Big Cove and New Hope.

TruVisit Alabama supervisors meet Madison County families at locations close to where the child lives. We don't charge mileage and we don't make families drive across the county to a fixed office.

Madison County courts and custody cases

Custody and divorce matters in Madison County are heard in the Madison County Circuit Court at the courthouse in downtown Huntsville, which handles domestic relations cases for one of the busiest and fastest-growing dockets in the state.

Our session reports are formatted in the objective, non-editorial, timestamped style these courts expect. They're designed to be filed directly with the court, delivered to your attorney, or shared with the guardian ad litem on your case.

How a Madison County custody case typically moves

  1. Complaint filed with the circuit clerk in Huntsville — the filing party files, the other party is served.
  2. Answer — the responding party typically has 30 days to answer under Alabama's civil procedure rules.
  3. Pendente lite hearing — for temporary custody, visitation, and support orders while the case is pending. Supervised visitation can be ordered here.
  4. Discovery — exchange of financial and case-relevant information.
  5. Mediation — courts frequently order mediation in contested custody cases before trial.
  6. Trial — custody cases in Alabama are decided by the judge in a bench trial; there are no jury trials for custody.
  7. Final judgment / decree.

Where supervised visitation enters the process

  • At the pendente lite stage — interim supervised visitation while the case is pending
  • In the final judgment — longer-term supervised visitation as part of the custody order
  • By petition to modify — changing an existing custody order to add or remove supervision
  • By emergency motion — when an immediate safety concern arises

A note on names: Madison city vs. Madison County Madison County contains both Huntsville and the separate City of Madison. If your order says "Madison County," your case is in the Huntsville courthouse regardless of which city you live in. If you live in the City of Madison west of County Line Road, your case may actually be in Limestone County — check your court order, and we'll confirm during intake.
